Google Search update adds consumer-facing AI agents

Historical record This story connects to a documented entry in the Agentic History timeline. Consumer-integrated agents extend the recent shift from chatbots toward agents that can act across tools and interfaces on a user’s behalf.

Google unveiled an updated version of Search with new AI features, including agents that can help users complete tasks from search.

The company said the update lets users ask more detailed questions, use search-based AI agents, and visualize topics with AI-generated interface tools. The launch was announced at Google I/O and was described by the company as its biggest Search update in 25 years.

Google said agentic features will appear inside Search rather than as a separate product surface.
